Why You Should Definitely Travel In The Off Season!

While summer and fall are typical travel months no matter where you live, the benefits of traveling in the off-season are endless. And knowing how to use those to your advantage can make a once unaffordable adventure much more manageable!

Timing Your Trip

The travel year is divided into three seasons: peak season (roughly June through August), shoulder season (April through May and September through October), and off-season (November through March).

During peak season you can expect high temperatures and larger crowds. Sunny weather and longer days are lovely, but if you’re flexible with dates, selecting a shoulder or off-season trip is just as grand! Tours are still going, restaurants are still open, and a lot of countries are ready for business. And while traveling in the winter or early spring can leave some with a bit of anxiety you’ll soon find out that the amazing pros severely outweigh the potential cons.

1. Little To No Crowds

This has got to be the BIGGEST advantage to traveling in the off-season; no crowds! Have you ever gone to a museum or park you’ve been dying to see, and it takes HOURS just to get close? No problem here!

There is the ease of movement along pedestrian walkways, and fewer waiting lines, not to mention the weather is less polluted. These are luxuries you simply can’t enjoy when you travel in the peak seasons.

Another bonus - Locals are typically in higher spirits when there are fewer tourists. You’ll notice a big difference in hospitality and receive special attention if staff isn’t being pulled in a million different directions.

2. Expenses Are Less

Everything from your accommodations to your flights, and even excursions, are typically less expensive than during the peak season. Destinations that are fueled by tourism want to keep adventure seekers coming throughout the entire year so take advantage of the discounts!

If you’re flexible in your travel, search for the most economic airfares or hotels when deciding on your dates. This could help you save even more. Some destinations will even offer additional goodies just to get you booked in slower months. Sign me up!

3. Feel More Secure

Imagine landing in an airport and discovering the place is so crowded that you can barely move. We’ve all been there and done that. Not only does it make travel less enjoyable it can sometimes be overwhelming, especially when you’ve landed in a new country with a difference language.

Traveling during the shoulder and off-season months gives you room to breathe, literally! Fewer travelers means fewer people, and a better ability to see your surroundings, keep your focus, and allow you to move with ease.

Bonus - Peak travel months mean more travel advisories which can pose security challenges. Travel during the shoulder and off-season are usually less stringent and less likely to pose an issue on travel days.

4. See And Experience More

A lot of amazing experiences happen in shoulder and off-season months! Think skiing in the Austrian Alps, or walking the tulip fields in the Netherlands. Those, and more, are only available in off-season travel!

Another benefit? You simply get to see more! With less crowds and less people you get to really appreciate where you are, what you’re seeing, and be present in the moment. What more can you ask for?

5. No Competition On Amenities

There is nothing worse than traveling to your favorite destination, only to realize that you cannot make the most of the facilities there. From the swimming pool being filled to the brim or the WiFi acting slow because of how many devices are logged on at once, the luxuries of your five-start hotel can sometimes be effected by how many guests are staying.

But, when traveling in the off-season you can sometimes have things all to yourself! Enjoy that spa service in peace and quiet. Treat yourself to a beautiful dinner at the finest restaurant and have the best seat in the house! There’s nothing better.
