Summer Travel - Avoid the Crowds!
European travel is at an all-time high which means more people and bigger crowds. Learn how to experience your favorite destinations without feeling overwhelmed.
Summer in Europe is undoubtedly enchanting, with its warm weather, blooming landscapes, and vibrant cultural festivals. However, as the peak tourist season, it can also mean navigating through bustling crowds at popular tourist attractions. But fear not! You can still savor the best of Europe while avoiding the tourist masses during the summer months. Get ready to discover hidden gems, tranquil spots, and lesser-known destinations that will make your journey truly unforgettable.
TRAVEL IN OFF/SHOULDER SEASON
If your schedule allows, consider traveling during the shoulder seasons of late spring or early autumn. This is one of the biggest pieces of advice I give to clients if you’re flexible in your travel dates! These periods offer a wonderful compromise, where the weather is still pleasant, and attractions are less crowded. You'll have the added advantage of lower accommodation prices and fewer lines at famous landmarks.
CHOOSE LESSER-KNOWN DESTINATIONS
Europe is a treasure trove of hidden gems that are often overlooked by the tourist masses. Instead of heading to the most popular cities, explore lesser-known destinations that offer unique experiences and authentic local culture. Think quaint villages, picturesque countryside, and off-the-beaten-path islands that remain untouched by mass tourism.
VISIT MAJOR ATTRACTIONS EARLY OR LATE IN THE DAY
If you cannot resist visiting iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower or the Colosseum, plan to arrive early in the morning or later in the evening. Most tourists tend to arrive during midday, leaving these sites relatively quieter during off-peak hours. Besides enjoying smaller crowds, you'll also be rewarded with stunning sunrise or sunset views.
EXPLORE UNIQUELY
Instead of following the well-trodden tourist routes, opt for alternative paths that offer unique perspectives of a city or region. Seek out scenic walking trails, cycle routes, or take boat trips to explore the natural beauty and architecture that lie just beyond the typical tourist hotspots.
EMBRACE LOCAL CULTURE
Delve into the local culture and traditions by attending festivals and events that are cherished by the locals. Participating in authentic festivities will give you a chance to interact with friendly locals while experiencing Europe's vibrant heritage without the overwhelming crowds.
PLAN ACCOMMODATIONS ACCORDINGLY
Steer clear of large, chain hotels situated in the city centers. Instead, opt for boutique hotels, charming bed-and-breakfasts, or cozy vacation rentals in residential neighborhoods. Not only will this provide a more authentic experience, but it will also shield you from the hustle and bustle of touristy areas.
Traveling in Europe during the summer need not be synonymous with battling hordes of tourists. Unlock a more intimate and rewarding travel experience by being flexible and embracing the spirit of adventure and exploration. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the hidden treasures Europe has to offer beyond the touristy façade!
