Rachael's Packing Tips

I have lived out of a carry-on suitcase for YEARS! Not only does it make getting through airports, transferring cars, and train rides much easier, it has allowed me to only pack my essentials.

Are you an over-packer? Do you have to sit on your bag to make sure it zips all the way? Here are my Top Packing Tips for maximizing the space in your suitcase!

LESS IS MORE

Going to another country can seem like a feat in itself, but it doesn’t mean you have to pack your entire closet! When traveling keep the age-old saying - less is more - in mind. When selecting clothes think layers instead of outfits. Pack in stages. Start with your essentials first, then once you see how much space is left in your suitcase add in your other items. Most people pack out of comfort, not necessity, and end up not wearing/using a lot of items they bring!

Packing Tip - Don’t forget that when checking a bag most airlines will make you weigh it. Anything over a certain weight can result in additional baggage fees. The less you pack the more money you save!

UTILIZE YOUR SHOES

The most important part of packing is to utilize any space you have in your suitcase. Every zipper, compartment, or spot should have something in it. One item typically forgotten about is shoes. Shoes are the PERFECT spot to house smaller items!

Packing Tip - In shoes that DO NOT SMELL, that is incredibly important, pack your underwear and socks. While small, items like this have a tendency to take up more space than you might think! Need a shoe deodorizer? Check out my favorite one here!

Now that you’ve gotten some extra items packed away where should you place your shoes in your suitcase? I recommend putting them at either the bottom of your bag or on the outer zip if applicable.

COMPRESSION PACKING CUBES

Compression packing cubes are going to be your BEST FRIEND!

These allow travelers to fit more items into their luggage all while keeping them neat and unwrinkled. I recommend using packing cubes as follows:

1 - Pants + Bottoms

2 - Dresses + Tops

3 - Makeup

4 - Toiletries

Compression packing cubes are what allow me to only travel with a carry-on and I can’t recommend them enough. I love the Gonex Compression Packing Cubes which you can purchase by clicking here!

FILL IN THE GAPS

Even the most impeccable packer will inevitably have gaps and open spaces once all your items have been put into your suitcase. These gaps are perfect for items such as hair dryers, curling/flat irons, USB converters, or portable power banks. Keep some of these items out while packing and see where you can place them!

Packing Note - Most hotels and AirBnBs have hair dryers available to use during your stay! Think about skipping this item altogether to save even more space in your bag.

INVEST IN GOOD LUGGAGE

Having good quality luggage for your trip is vital. No matter your budget it’s important to remember this luggage will house all of your items while you travel so you don’t wan to skimp. I recommend two luggage options to my clients:

1. Amazon Basics ABS Hard-Shell Suitcase

This suitcase has over 36,000 5 Star reviews and is only $110! With double-spinner wheels, a hard-shell case, and telescoping handles this is a lot of bang for your buck. A fantastic option for travelers on a budget who don’t want to sacrifice quality. Did I mention it has four color options as well? Click here to check it out!

2. Away Luggage

If you love to travel and find yourself traveling multiple times a year I cannot recommend Away Luggage enough! With two carry-on options that fit most airline overhead storage compartments, as well as the ability to purchase luggage sets, Away was built for modern travel. The lightweight, polycarbonate hard shell luggage can withstand cobblestone streets and plane transfers.

Carry-on bags start at $275, and all luggage comes with a lifetime warranty that covers any damage to the shell, wheels, handles, zippers, and many other functional elements of our luggage.
