Flower lover? Do bright colors make you happy? Tulip season in Amsterdam is the PERFECT time to visit!
I have had the pleasure of staying in Amsterdam for the past month, and not only is this city filled with amazing things to do, but I have been able to experience something that has been on my bucket list for years - Tulip Season!
There are many things that come to mind when thinking about Amsterdam - bicycles, windmills, art - but what really makes this city really unique? Once a year, the top gardeners in the country plant MILLIONS of bulbs to create the most stunning floral arrangements and gardens you have ever seen. Here are my Top Four Reasons to travel to Amsterdam during Tulip Season, a decision you will never regret!
1. The Flowers Themselves
When I say the flowers are the most beautiful things you will lay your eyes on I mean it. Acres upon acres of gorgeous flowers, stunning gardens that last for blocks, and flowers everywhere you turn!
It is scientifically proven that flowers make you feel better. Seeing, smelling, and receiving flowers have an immediate impact on your happiness. Welcoming spring surrounded by colorful flowers after a dark winter was exactly what I needed.
2. Keukenhof Garden
The Garden of Europe AKA Keukenhof Gardens is one of the largest flower gardens in the world. Every year between the months of April and May, this 6-week festival celebrates the nation’s national flower, the tulip. Every year over 7 million tulip bulbs are planted in the park. It becomes the busiest tourist attractions in the entire country during these 6 weeks.
The gardens were originally a part of a castle and ancestral home, before being converted into a display garden in the late 1940s. The purpose of the Keukenhof gardens was to showcase growers’ products and was an initial hit when it opened to the public in 1950. Since then it has grown in popularity and over 100 tulip bulb growers donate over 7 million bulbs each year.
3. Photos & Selfies
Flowers are the perfect background for any photo, and Tulip Season is prime time to visit! We took so many photos… hundreds of photos…. but they are some of my absolute favorites from our time in Amsterdam. You can’t help but smile bigger, be more playful, and enjoy being present when you’re surrounded by millions of beautiful flowers. We had so much fun walking around, getting lost, and enjoying the scenery. It’s times like this that make travel so incredible.

4. Tulip Experience Amsterdam
Tulip Experience Amsterdam is a MUST-see during a visit to the flower bulb region (Bollenstreek)! They take you on a dynamic journey through the history, the breeding process, and the magic of the tulip. The story behind the Dutch icon is told vividly from the point of view of the tulip grower. With a museum of historical items such as machinery, and a lovely coffee shop on-site, you could spend HOURS just learning about the amazing process of growing tulips or walking their beautiful fields!
I cannot stress enough how much of a wonderful experience this was. Not only was I able to tick something off my bucket list, but being outside and exploring in the beautiful spring weather was a lifesaver for my mental health.
Travel has so many wonderful benefits. From pushing us out of our comfort zone to allowing you to experience new places and people, Tulip Season has been, by far, one of my favorite travels yet.
